About Canmore Its roots were driven by the railway but its present and future is all about working and playing hard. Started as a coal mining town to fuel the new emerging railway in the late 1800s, Canmore now boasts a population of over 12,000 permanent residents and over 5,000 non-permanent/second home owner residents who come out to enjoy what Canmore has to offer. The town centre's elevation is at 1309 metres (4296 ft) surrounded by the beautiful Rocky Mountains and hugged by the Bow River.
The town quickly became a major tourist destination after the 1988 Winter Olympics and still boasts world class venues and events within the valley in downhill skiing, cross country, biathalon, mountain biking and more. You can quickly get caught up in the majesty of the mountains and all the sports that are offered from a game of golf, fresh powder to ski on, to a day of rock climbing. Or you can easily settle into a relaxing day with a wide variety of restaurants, spas, art displays, shops and more. There truly is something for everyone.
